What it is
A scan — or a downloaded STL — is "dumb" geometry: triangles with no design intent. Real CAD work means rebuilding the part over the mesh: extracting dimensions, identifying features like holes and cylinders, and producing a parametric model you can actually modify.
This pipeline doesn't ask "does the rebuilt curve look good?" It asks "how much does it deviate from the source mesh?" Aesthetic questions decompose into measurable quantities: fidelity, smoothness, symmetry, continuity, proportion.
How it works
- Intake — provenance, license, and unit validation. The pipeline refuses to guess your units; you confirm.
- Quality gate — four mesh metrics, one verdict: clean, noisy, or needs-rescan. A rescan verdict is a feature, not a bug.
- Analysis — automated geometry analysis picks the rebuild track: prismatic (parametric reconstruction from detected features) or organic (surface fitting with deviation loops).
- Verification — deviation check against the original mesh via CloudCompare. Pass/fail against your tolerance.
- Output — STEP/FCStd/STL, 2D drawing, report, and a project manifest.
Status
Released. The first GruntAndMuse project, published 2026-10-02. Phase 1 (intake through verification tooling) is built and syntax-tested; the deviation script needs one live CloudCompare run to confirm its output parsing. Vulnerability reporting policy published 2026-10-09.
Requires Python 3.10+. The deviation check needs CloudCompare on your PATH.

Standing on the shoulders of Python and CloudCompare — CloudCompare does the deviation measuring. Free tools doing the heavy lifting.
